Vanessa Nakate, Klima und Kinder

ENGLISH BELOW

Folgen sind u.a.

„This crisis is effecting children who are not responsible for the climatecrisis
on a continent that is responsible for less than 4% of emissions.“ –  Vanessa Nakate

„Most governments have youth programs, most governments like to plant trees. But when we start to talk about fossil fuels, when we start to talk about the big things that need to change, no one listens.“ – Vanessa Nakate

Vanessa Nakate, climate and children

The UNICEF ambassador and #FridaysForFuture activist from Uganda Vanessa Nakate reported to us on 25.01.2023 in the context of a parliamentary breakfast in the Bundestag about the fatal effects on children already today. UNICEF Germany, my MP colleague Debbie Düring and I were inviting.

Children are particularly affected by psychological and physical damage caused by the #climatecrisis

The climate crisis & increased extreme weather events are causing destruction and devastation. This is accompanied by the loss of culture, of home. Especially in early years, these traumatic events can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Young people in particular experience more and more catastrophes over time, which leads to particularly strong mental stress. Consequences are among other things feelings of powerlessness, loss of appetite, panic attacks. Extractivism, land theft as well as expropriations to build up fossil structures also lead to destruction and loss, as well as trauma.

Malnutrition & air pollution cause long-lasting mental illnesses (including depression and ADHD). The problem is well known, yet only 9 out of 95 countries have included mental health in their climate action plans (WHO) including India and Philippines.

„This crisis is effecting children who are not responsible for the climatecrisis
on a continent that is responsible for less than 4% of emissions.“ – Vanessa Nakate

Climate injustice is also evident here: people most affected by mental illness due to the climate crisis have contributed the least to it -children and youth will bear the greatest mental burden, or already do.

Individual activism can help. But here, above all, politicians are called upon to act. Not doing so will only lead to further frustration and despair.

What we're working on

Political action against the climate crisis is an elementary and important step for more mental and physical health of children. The uncomplicated support for already affected areas (LossAndDamage) is indispensable and was launched at the last World Climate Conference in Egypt. Here, we are fighting for rapid aid that reaches the weakest first.

But also the active protection of children’s mental health is necessary. Here it needs education & health care.

Thank you Vanessa for visiting us today and thank you so much for your great work! Thanks to UNICEF and Debbie, and to all the great guests for this Parliamentary Breakfast.
